Corvair Prop Hub

Corvair Prop Hub

This is the Prop Hub made for my corvair engine by Dan Woodward of Knight Hawke Experimental Aircraft in Epsom, NH. Dan makes prop hubs for VW and Subaru conversions. When I came home from the 1999 Gathering with William Wynne's Conversion Manual. I asked Dan if he could make me a hub for the Corvair engine. He took a look at William's drawings included with the manual.

He said he would come up with something. This is the result. A hub with a third step to mount the flywheel on the hub without the need to make a puck to keep the flywheel and hub strait. The flywheel is one of Dan's universal ones. The ring gear is from a Subaru mated to an aluminum web that Dan machines. Most are used for a pre-rotator for Gyroplanes.

The bell housing is cut down to make the front cover on the engine. A 3/8" plate is used to mount the '85-'89 Subaru Starter
The top cover is made from 1/4" aluminum plate. Grade 8 cap screws 3/8-24 mount the hub to the flywheel flange of the crankshaft. The crank was drilled and tapped for the cap screws and a 1"-14 safety shaft. The safety shaft was made out of 1" x .188 wall 4130 steel tubing.
